Do you need access to a dataset to advance your research? Is there data that could benefit your department or research group? The Johns Hopkins Libraries Data Grant Program offers funding to acquire datasets that support and enhance research efforts.

Apply for the JH Libraries Data Grant and, contingent on eligibility and availability, you will receive access to the data you need.

Researcher Eligibility

You must be a Johns Hopkins affiliated faculty, student, or staff actively conducting research.

Why Can Apply

  • Johns Hopkins faculty, students, postdocs, or staff conducting research
  • Undergraduate students may apply with a faculty sponsor

Eligible Data

We fund:

  • One-time purchases or one-year subscriptions to datasets
  • Datasets that can be licensed as broadly as possible (preference for campus-wide licenses)
  • Individual-use licenses in limited cases, depending on need and budget

Funding priority is given to requests under $5,000. Larger requests will be considered based on impact, need, and available funds.

We do not fund:

  • Restricted data (e.g., containing personally identifiable information or protected health information)
  • Data from unverified or low-quality sources

Program Timeline

  • Applications open: September 15

  • Applications close: October 31

  • Awards announced: November 17

If awarded, we will work with you and the vendor to acquire the data. Please be aware that negotiating a license with a data vendor is complicated and time-consuming, so notification of a grant award does not mean the data will be readily available.

How to Apply

To apply, please complete the JH Libraries Data Grant Application.

You’ll be asked to provide:

  • Basic information about the dataset

  • How the dataset will support your research

  • How it may benefit the broader JHU research community
